Rollable Displays | Rollable versus rigid displaysToday’s conventional mobile LCD and OLED displays are based on glass and so are rigid, with no flexibility. Polymer Vision, the company behind Readius®, will change this with the introduction of its rollable displays enabled by plastic electronics and E-ink front plane. Rollable displays are a unique solution to resolve the dilemma created by consumer demand for larger displays in small sized mobile devices.
While all rollable displays are flexible, not all flexible displays are rollable. Flexible displays, although not yet available in the market, have received a lot of attention over the past years. Such flexible displays can be bent without breaking, a useful feature compared to conventional displays. Rollable displays take this flexibility a major step further. As thin as paper, a rollable display can be completely rolled up into the size of a finger. This creates unique advantages for mobile devices, where displays can be large when in use, yet rolled or folded away into a small area when not.

The additional material and mechanical requirements of a rollable display make this a much greater technology challenge than flexible displays, or indeed any other display concept. The rollable display must be a) extremely thin; b) comprise only of mechanically rollable layers; c) have an optimal adhesion between all layers of the display and of course d) be capable of been rolled or folded many times over periods of years.
After 15 years of research, development and industrialization, Polymer Vision has succeeded in pioneering the mobile flexible display industry through the introduction of the world’s first rollable displays.
