NYT writes a positive review on the first pocket eReader

Please do not consider this 2nd posting in as many days as a sign of things to come. It is just that following the first one, the New York Times released an article which I want to share with you. The full article, written by Anne Eisenberg, can be found in the New York Times article "Electronic Papyrus: The Digital Book, Unfurled".

Since this article was published we have already received numerous requests as to why Readius will not be available in countries other than those mentioned. The answer is that we are working on the content and logistics sides to expand this to other European countries such as - but not only -France and The Netherlands.

Note that to receive automatic updates about the market launch please subscribe at: http://www.readius.com/subscribe.

We will keep you posted.

Will the Readius function as a cell phone as well?

I have seen a couple statements and images indicating that the Readius will also be able to function as a cell phone. Are these teasers or is there fact to them? And if so, will the unit be supported by only one cellular service provider or more than one? (I am primarily curious about support in the USA, but I am sure potential consumers in other countries are wondering the same thing) ~Brenton

Readius as cellphone

Brenton,

Readius is powered for high speed 3.5G UMTS HSDPA cellular connectivity. It does have voice application for use with headphones. This model is however targeted at the mobile data market - such as ebook reading, personal content and digital news on the move. This is where Readius eclipses all other pocket sized mobile devices in the market.  We will share the news on service providers in the Autumn/Fall.

Exciting! Can you speak about the file formats for the Readius? XML? PDF? I've heard negative things about the Kindle's support for PDF. And of course, that also uses its own proprietary AZW format. I evangelize the upstream movement of XML for trade publishers because of portable devices. This one looks quite promising. Looking forward to learning more. Viel Glück! thank you Marianne,

Readius supports Text, HTML and PDF formats. Before launch we will announce further specific eBook formats that will be supported. One way or the other, our goal is to make sure you have access to all of your favorite books, right out of your pocket.
